Perfectly Ten

Nine was fine, but it's so yesterday. Today you begin the second decade of your young life.

Sweet guy, you're the most random person I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. You're never bored and can make a game out of the most menial tasks. Recently we were in a pool, swimming laps together. I looked for you underwater and didn't see my son, but rather, a porpoise – buoyantly flipping and bouncing off the bottom. You told me that you were "just being joyful." When I lose sight of the moment you always bring me back to where I belong.

I know that your curious nature will lead you to new and exciting places. You're the guy who takes the long option. Why go from Point A to Point B when you can go up, over, squeeze in between or go around something. It's far more interesting.

You're big in every way – full of personality, thoughtful and deeply loyal. I love the spaces in between your teeth and your wide open smile. It says so much about the warm and engaging person you are.

Very soon a day will come when I can no longer see over your head. When you run out from school, down the hill and into my arms, I brace myself hoping that you will not bowl me over. Although I'm always available for your ginormous hugs, please remember that your mother is a delicate flower.

Sweet guy, my wish for you is a lifetime of double digit birthdays. May you always be as radiant and playful as you are today. Happy Birthday.
